Your PFD
Test Your Flotation IQ
What’s the single most important thing you can do avoid becoming a drowning victim while boating?
%
of fatal boating accident victims drowned
%
were not wearing a life jacket
The USCG reports that… Where cause of death was known, 75% of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims with reported life jacket usage, 87% were not wearing a life jacket.
And how many of those people who drowned had these reasons for not wearing a life jacket?
No worries, dude, I’m a good swimmer!
(Even good swimmers can drown when ejected from a boat, struggling in cold rough water, or pulled under by heavy wet clothing.)
Oh, I’ll get out the life jacket under the seat and put it on if we get in trouble.
(Trouble is like a rattlesnake… it can bite before you can react to danger. It’s also impossible to get your PFD from under the seat when you’re ejected, fall overboard, or in a collision.)
The excuses go on and on from… wearing that life jacket makes me look uncool, to… it makes me feel bulky! And none of them are an excuse for becoming a drowning victim which looks very uncool.
